Matthew Bennett is an award-winning composer, producer and ethnomusicologist with a
unique approach and recognizable musical language forged from years of immersion in many
of the world's musical styles, cultures and traditions.
He has scored many films, including The Smith Family, which won widespread critical
acclaim, garnered a major industry award (Directors Guild of America, 2003) and was
nominated for an Emmy Award. Recent work has received a Grammy Award nomination.
His work is heard everyday by millions of people around the world. He has created music for
leading film studios, broadcast networks, publishers, cultural organizations, corporations and
research labs.
Composing from a young age, Bennett received an international composition prize from
Downbeat magazine while in high school and carried out PhD work at the University of
Washington. After conducting music research in Africa, he left academia to accept a position
working in the international music group at Microsoft, before founding Temporal Arts.
With extensive knowledge of traditional and contemporary scoring, recording and production
techniques, and expertise in a wide range of the world's musical traditions, Bennett brings a
great deal of creative vision to every project. But the needs of the stories he supports are
always primary: "It's my job to create a musical language that serves the story and the
filmmaker's vision" he says.
Bennett is the recipient of numerous prizes and grants. He is a member of the National
Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the Academy of Film & Television Music, the Society
For Ethnomusicology, and former President of the Seattle Composers Alliance.
